The florin was introduced into circulation in 1849 as a first step towards decimal coinage. Before that, a couple of patterns were prepared in 1848. The denomination proposed for the coin was a decade - defined as a tenth of a pound or 100 milles; it was later renamed to florin.

Obverse

Young head of Queen Victoria to left (portrait by William Wyon). Hair bound with a double fillet and collected into a knot behind. Around, the monarch's legend VICTORIA REGINA (translated from Latin: Queen Victoria); below, the date 1848.
