Halfcrown King George III, Small Head, Coin Type from United Kingdom (issued 1817 - 1820)
Coin TypeHalfcrown King George III, Small Head

The halfcrown (or half crown) was a denomination of the pre-decimal Pound Sterling coinage worth one-eighth of a pound, or two and a half shillings (a full crown being defined as five shillings), or 30 pence. In sums, it was abbreviated "2/6" (pronounced "two and six" - two shillings and six pence, a full shilling being twelve pence). The half crown was first issued in 1549 in the reign of King Edward VI.

Halfcrown coins issued during the reign of King George III are part of the great recoinage of 1816 have a reverse design which is similar to that of the shilling and sixpence coins issued at the same time. They were initially issued with a "large head" portrait showing the king's bare shoulders; this was not well accepted and was discontinued after 1817, being replaced by this simpler "small head" type on which the reverse was slightly changed too.

At the time the coins were issued, King George III no longer ruled in person but was subject to the regency of his son the Prince of Wales, later King George IV.

The composition is Sterling Silver (0.925 silver) and the coins have 0.4205 oz ASW (ounces of Absolute Silver Weight). The half crown was demonetised (ahead of other pre-decimal coins) on 1 January 1970, the year before the United Kingdom adopted decimal currency.

The reverse of the coin shows the crowned shield bearing the Royal Arms of the United Kingdom within the Garter of the Order of the Garter, with the motto HONI · SOIT · QUI · MAL · Y · PENSE · inscribed on it. "Honi soit qui mal y pense" is an Anglo-Norman maxim which means "Shame on whosoever would think badly of it," or "May he be shamed who thinks badly of it". Its literal translation from Old French is "Shame be to him who thinks evil of it."

The shield is quartered, depicting in the first and fourth quarters the three passant guardant lions of England; in the second, the rampant lion and double tressure flory-counterflory of Scotland; and in the third, a harp for Ireland. At centre, an escutcheon of the arms of Brunswick-Lüneburg (Electorate of Hanover), of which King George III was Elector as Georg III. Wilhelm Friedrich, and later king when it was elevated to a kingdom; the shield is crowned with the Crown of Charlemagne - reflecting the King's role as Arch-Treasurer of the Holy Roman Empire.

The crown on top is St Edward's Crown, named after Saint Edward the Confessor, one of the last Anglo-Saxon kings of England. It has been traditionally used to crown English and British monarchs at their coronations since the 13th century, with a two-century gap between 1689 and 1911 so King George III was not himself crowned with it.

Around the rim, the rest of the monarch's legend: BRITANNIARUM REX FID: DEF: - abbreviated from Britanniarum Rex Fidei Defensor, it means "King of the Britains, Defender of the Faith".
