Gold Ten Kilos 2013 Year of the Snake, Coin from Australia
CoinGold Ten Kilos 2013 Year of the Snake

The Australian ten kilograms of gold piece (abbreviated as 10 kg gold and designated with Au for "gold") is an extremely large bullion format which, for understandable reasons, is not used very often. There are two mints authorised to strike legal tender in Australia: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.

Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.

This massive gold coin is part of the Lunar Series II issued by the Perth Mint, and marks the Chinese 2013 Year of the Snake (10 February 2013 - 30 January 2014).

The mint says about it:
In 2013, The Perth Mint’s internationally renowned Australian Lunar Series II celebrates the Year of the Snake, the sixth animal in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac. The birth dates for people ruled by the Chinese lunar snake include 1905, 1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001 and 2013. Those born under the influence of this sign are said to be intelligent, graceful, independent, analytical and charming.

The obverse of the coin shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.

In small letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).

Around the effigy is the monarch's legend, the date of issue and the value: ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 10 KILO 9999 GOLD 2013 30000 DOLLARS.

The inscription also includes the precious metal content, ten kilograms of 99.99% gold.
