The Cook Islands, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar circulates in parallel with the local Cook Islands Dollar; at the same time, the government also authorises many legal tender coins in the Cook Islands Dollar currency for collector's purposes. Many of them are in standard sizes, including the half gram (0.5 g) of gold mini-coin format - such as this coin.
This coin is part of the Ancient Greece series and is dedicated to Ptolemaios I.
Ptolemaios (Ptolemy I Soter - "the Saviour", 367 BC - 282 BC) was a Macedonian general and companion of Alexander the Great. After the breakdown of Alexander's empire, Ptolemy became king of Egypt, which he had previously governed as part of the empire. Besides his military achievements, he introduced coinage to Egypt as well as establishing the famous library in Alexandria. His dynasty ruled Egypt for more than three centuries until it was conquered by Rome in 30 BC. |
