Silver Half Ounce 2023 Year of the Rabbit, Coin from Ghana
CoinSilver Half Ounce 2023 Year of the Rabbit

The Ghanaian Cedi has been the currency of Ghana since 1965, when it replaced the pre-decimal Ghanaian Pound.

Apart from the regular circulating coinage, the country has also authorised some foreign mints to issue commemorative and bullion coins under its jurisdiction. These are typically in standard bullion sizes, such as half ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1/2 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum).

The mint says about this coin:
The Chinese calendar features a dozen animals that rotate in 12-year cycles. Since 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit, that means that its most recent lunar year was 2011. According to tradition, if you were born in the Year of the Rabbit, then your character traits will map onto those of the rabbit. People born in this lunar year tend to be quiet, intelligent, and loving. They dislike conflict, fear criticism, and will do anything to please others.

Obverse
Ghana / Silver Half Ounce 2023 Year of the Rabbit - obverse photo

The obverse of the coin shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.

In small letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).

Around the effigy is the monarch's legend, the date of issue and the value: ELIZABETH II REPUBLIC OF GHANA TWO CEDIS 2023 Ag999.

It is unclear why the Queen's effigy is shown, given that she was Queen of Ghana only until 1960, after which time the country became a republic (not to mention that she died in 2022).
