Coin | Silver Two Ounces 2020 Gustav Klimt |
---|
|
The Ghanaian Cedi has been the currency of Ghana since 1965, when it replaced the pre-decimal Ghanaian Pound.
Apart from the regular circulating coinage, the country has also authorised some foreign mints to issue commemorative and bullion coins under its jurisdiction. These are typically in standard ounce-based sizes, such as two troy ounces of silver (abbreviated as 2 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum).
This coin is the second issue in the World's Greatest Artists series by Mint XXI, and is dedicated to Gustav Klimt.
Gustav Klimt (1862 - 1918) was an Austrian symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Secession movement. Klimt is noted for his paintings, murals, sketches, and other objets d'art. Klimt's primary subject was the female body, and his works are marked by a frank eroticism. |

Obverse | |
In the left part of the obverse, the coin depicts the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown worn for her Coronation (her effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait"). Normally, the initials of the designer Jody Clark are below the neck truncation when this portrait of the Queen is used on coinage, but they are not displayed here. It is unclear why the Queen's effigy is shown, given that she was Queen of Ghana only until 1960, after which time the country became a republic.
The rest of the surface of the obverse has a background of geometric motifs, central of which is a spiral illustrating Fibonacci's sequence.
Around above is the name of the country, below which the date of issue: REPUBLIC OF GHANA 2020. Vertically on the right, ELIZABETH II. Around below, the face value 10 CEDIS.
Below left and right, separated by the face value, the precious metal content: 2oz Ag 999 (two troy ounces of 99.9% silver). |
