The Republic of Liberia has been issuing its own coinage denominated in Liberian Dollars since 1847. Apart from the circulating coinage, the country also allows some foreign mints to strike non-circulating commemorative and bullion coins under its authority. These are usually dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to the country itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes, including the very large five troy ounces (5oz) of silver format.
This coin is part of the third release in the Commanders series by the Scottsdale Mint, and features Conquistador Hernán Cortés (Hernan Cortes).
The mint says about it: Hernán Cortés is a name that stands out for his audacious and decisive leadership. Landing on the shores of Mexico in 1519, Cortés faced the mighty Aztec Empire with a small force. His famous decision to destroy his ships left no room for retreat, only for victory or death. This act not only demonstrated his resolve but also cemented his commitment to the conquest ahead.
"We shall either conquer or die." - Hernán Cortés
This declaration encapsulates Cortés' fearless mindset. Facing incredible odds, Cortés knew that inspiring his men was crucial. By eliminating their means of retreat, he unified them under a singular, uncompromising mission: to conquer. His strategic acumen was further displayed through alliances with discontented indigenous tribes, turning potential enemies into invaluable allies. Cortés leveraged these alliances and his superior weaponry to achieve a stunning victory over the Aztec Empire, culminating in the capture of Tenochtitlan in 1521.
The Scottsdale Mint Commander's Series celebrates such leaders, whose bold decisions and strategic brilliance have left a lasting impact on history. The coin dedicated to Hernán Cortés captures the essence of his daring and leadership, immortalizing his legacy. |
