Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, collector and bullion coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself.
This coin was issued as part of a small series to "honour the biggest cricketing legend in the world" - Indian player Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar.
Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar has been the most complete batsman of his time, the most prolific run maker of all time and the biggest cricket icon the game of cricket has ever known. He holds almost every batting record worth owning in the game, including those for most runs, most hundreds in Test matches and One Day Internationals (ODIs). He also has the most international runs.
With the announcement of his retirement from Cricket in November 2012 and a tearful farewell at his home cricket ground at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, he drew his 24-year illustrious career to an end.
The coin design has been hand crafted by Joaquin Jimenez, one of the world's most renowned coin designers. |
