Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of coins under the authority of Niue. Most of these are commemorative and collector issues dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - typically, one ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum). Those issued at prices much higher than their bullion value are separately listed in the Non-Circulating Legal Tender (NCLT) silver ounce section of the site.
Unlike them, this coin is targeted at bullion investors and was initially released at a price close to the value of its precious metal content.
This coin is part of the Slovakia Eagle ("Orol") range of premium bullion coins issued by the Czech Mint.
The Mint says about it: The Slovaks waited patiently for the opportunity for self-determination for a long time - like a bird of prey circling in the sky over the majestic Tatra Mountains and looking out for its prey. It is no wonder that Slovak poets and revivalists of the 19th century took the eagle as a soul mate and that Ľudovít Štúr himself named the cultural supplement of the Slovak national newspaper "Orol tatránski" (The Tatra Eagle). Despite the efforts of their earlier rulers, the Slovaks retained their culture, language and character until they finally managed to gain independence. The symbol of all they have achieved has again been the eagle, which has represented power, victory, freedom and grandeur, but also a restoration and a new life. The predator, which is a representative of the Christian heavenly kingdom, also refers to the Slovak religious tradition. |

Obverse | |
The obverse of the coin shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.
In small letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).
Around the effigy is the monarch's legend, the date of issue and the value: NIUE ISLAND ELIZABETH II - 2 DOLLARS - 2021 -.
The Queen's effigy is smaller than normal and is enclosed within an oval cartouche. Between that and the outer rim with the inscriptions, the background is covered with ornaments of the Čičmany pattern, which is unique to Slovak folk architecture. |

Reverse | |
The reverse side of the coin is dominated by a depiction of the golden eagle, which is the lord of the Tatras (mountains); in the background, Kriváň peak in Slovakia.
Around above, the inscription SLOVAKIA 1oz Ag 999; "1oz Ag 999" means "one ounce of 99.9% silver" - Ag is abbreviated from Argentum, the Latin word for silver.
Above right, the mint mark of the Czech Mint - a crowned monogram of the letters ČM (Česká mincovna). Above left, the monogram of the designer, MD (for Martin Dašek). |
