The Northern Mariana Islands is an island country in the western Pacific, in free association with the United States. In one way or another, the country has been under US administration since it was established, and has never had its own separate currency - it has always used the US Dollar. However, it allows some foreign mints to issue coins under its authority; these are denominated in US Dollars but are only legal tender in the Marianas, so can in a way be considered to be in "Northern Mariana Islands Dollars", even though such a currency does not officially exist.

The coins are usually dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to the country itself. Some of them are in standard bullion sizes, but some of the silver $5 (five dollars) - such as this one - are not; their weight is more than a half ounce but less than one ounce, and is "metric" - 25 grams of silver.

This coin is the first issue in a heart-shaped series issued (almost) annually with a new design every year.

Obverse

The obverse design displays at its centre the Seal of the Northern Mariana Islands, which consists of a shield superimposed with a star representing the United States, and a latte stone - used in Ancient house construction as house foundation by the Chamorro people, one of the main ethnic elements on the islands. Surrounding the shield is a "mwarmwar" (decorative wreath) representing the Carolinian ethnicity, and the sacred history and customs of the islands.

Below the seal, an American eagle. In the background, rays of light.

Around above, the inscription COMMONWEALTH OF THE NORTHERN MARIANA ISLANDS; separated from it by a thin line, 50 stars (25 on the left, and 25 on the right), representing the 50 United States (to which the commonwealth is associated).

Below, the face value 5 DOLLARS.

The reverse is coloured and depicts two cherubs hugging. They are sitting on a blue rose flower, and there are other roses in the background.
