This one-ounce silver coin portrays Nelson Mandela as a young and passionate lawyer. In August 1952, he, together with Oliver Tambo, opened the first black-owned law firm in South Africa. Pricing the coin was a conscious tribute to Nelson Mandela’s legacy and the Mint's way of paying it forward. To celebrate 100 years since the birth of Mandela, and in remembrance of the 27 long years he spent in prison, R27 of every bronze coin purchased was donated to the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
The inscription around the rim of the coin reads NELSON MANDELA CENTENARY (above) and the anniversary dates 18 JULY 1918 and 18 JULY 2018 (below), separated by the value and denomination R50 (Fifty Rand).
Around below right, the composition of the coin: Cu Al Ni (the chemical symbols for copper, aluminium and nickel).
The initials of the die-sinker, PB (for Paul Botes), are inside on Mandela's shoulder, before the Cu in "Cu Al Ni". The reverse artist was S Nyoni. |
