This portrait of King Charles III shows the monarch bare-headed (not crowned), facing left. It was developed by Dan Thorne, a Royal Mint designer.

The portrait was initially released on collector coins issued by the Cook Islands.

On 5 October 2023 it was announced that the Royal Australian Mint will adopt it as "the official Commonwealth Effigy designed by The Royal Mint in London with Royal Approval". The first circulating coins to bear the effigy were of the $1 denomination; they entered circulation on 1 December 2023.
