Gold Quarter Ounce 2025 Rowi Kiwi, Coin from New Zealand - detailed information

New Zealand uses the New Zealand Dollar as its circulation currency for daily transactions. The country also issues a number of commemorative and collector coins, including in the internationally popular gold quarter-ounce format (abbreviated as 1/4 oz Au, where "Au" comes from the Latin word for gold, Aurum). Authorised by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, the official issuer of these coins is NZ Post - which also issues the country's postal stamps. Manufacturing of the coins is commissioned to various foreign mints.

The coins are "Non-Circulating Legal Tender" (NCLT) and not bullion because they are issued at prices much higher than their intrinsic value and are targeted at collectors who appreciate them for their artistic or sentimental value, and not at bullion investors.

This coin is part of an annual series featuring a new Kiwi design every year, and depicts the Rowi Brown Kiwi (Apteryx rowi).

NZ Post says about it:
"With the population increasing steadily under management, rowi have gradually been released into the hills surrounding Lake Gault since 2018 and are dispersing through their ancestral home. The removal of predators from South Westland’s forests should mean that the rowi can continue to recover with less intensive management. Rowi are long-lived and are thought to reach 60-80 years of age. This allows them to be slow breeders, usually laying just 1 - 2 eggs a year. Unlike most other kiwi species, both adults (the male and the female) share incubation of the egg, as can the juveniles from previous years, who might stay with their parents for up to 3 years."

The designer of the kiwi is Sacha Lees, while the border around the reverse was designed by Fayne Robinson.
