Legend | ELIZABETH · II · DEI · GRA REGINA · FID · DEF |
---|---|
Full text | ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA FIDEI DEFENSATRIX |
Translation | Translated from Latin: Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith. |
This legend is displayed on British coinage, including bullion and commemorative (various denominations of the sovereign type, as well as Crown-sized commemoratives and other Non-Circulating Legal Tender), issued during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. On coins carrying her Fourth Portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley, the legend does not go completely around the reverse; where it is combined with the Fifth Portrait (by Jody Clark), the legend runs continuously around the rim and has dividers between every word, as: ELIZABETH · II · DEI · GRA · REGINA · FID · DEF ·. By long-standing tradition, the legends of ruling British monarchs are rendered in Latin. On coinage, these are abbreviated because of the limited space available. Below, you can find a list of the individual coins that had it on their obverse. |
