This coin set is the first issued by the (then newly founded) Royal Australian Mint, and contains all six of the circulating denominations issued by Australia at the time: from 1 Cent up to 50 Cents (the larger denominations of $1 and $2 had not yet not introduced at that time). These are the first decimal Australian coins, after the transition from the pre-decimal Australian Pound.
The 50 cents coin is the only circulating silver issued by Australia after decimalisation; after 1966, the denomination was debased and the round silver coin included in this set was replaced by a twelve-sided copper-nickel 50c piece.
The 5, 10, and 20 cents in the set were struck by the Royal Mint in London. |
