This uncirculated set marks a transformation not seen for 70 years, as the effigy on the obverse of Australian coinage changes from Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to His Majesty King Charles III. The Royal Australian Mint commemorated this historic numismatic turning point with this unique and historic set.
Tradition holds that Australian legal tender coins bear the effigy of the Monarch on their obverse. Five definitive portraits of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II appear on five of the coins, while the new effigy of His Majesty King Charles III by Daniel Thorne appears on the sixth. In keeping with tradition the new portrait of the King faces left, the opposite direction from the effigies of his mother.
In Australia, there have been six portraits of Queen Elizabeth II on circulating coinage: the five definitive portraits used by the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth countries, plus a special "Australian" effigy by Vladimir Gottwald, which is not represented in this set.

- 10 Cents - with the second portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, by Arnold Machin (1966 - 1984)
- 20 Cents - with the third portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, by Raphael Maklouf (1985 - 1998)
- 50 Cents - with the fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley (1998 - 2019)
- $1 - with the fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark portrait (sixth in Australia - in "uncouped" version (2019 - 2023)
- $2 - with the portrait of King Charles III by Dan Thorne (first issue in the two-dollar denomination). |
