This is the Uncouped version of Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, first used in Australia. The original version was unveiled by the Royal Mint on 2nd March 2015, when it was introduced on United Kingdom coins. This is only the fifth definitive portrait of The Queen to appear on British circulating coins since her accession to the throne in 1952. While the portrait went into production immediately in the United Kingdom, other Commonwealth countries did not follow the Royal Mint's example and continued with the Fourth Portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley. Australia introduced the Jody Clark Portrait halfway through 2019. In the Australian version though, the portrait is "uncouped", meaning that it extends almost to the coin's rim and includes the Queen's shoulders; she wears a necklace. The designer's initials are on the Queen's shoulder in this version, and the legend is interrupted by its lower part on circulation coins; on commemorative or bullion coins where the face value is on the obverse, the legend and face value run continuously around the rim as on British coinage. Apart from Australia, it is also seen on commemorative coinage issued under the authorities of Saint Helena and Tokelau. Note that in Australia, this effigy is referred to as the "Sixth Portrait" - taking into account the effigy by Vladimir Gottwald released on a commemorative coin in 2000. |
