Fifty Euro Cents, Austria, Coin Type from Austria - detailed information

Fifty Euro Cents, Austria, Coin Type from Austria (issued 2002 - )
Coin TypeFifty Euro Cents, Austria

The Fifty Euro Cents coin (€0.50) has a value of one half of a Euro and is composed of an alloy called Nordic Gold (89% copper, 5% aluminium, 5% zinc, and 1% tin). Like all other common circulation coins (from 1 cent to €2), the denomination is issued by the separate countries in the Eurozone and is legal tender in all of them, irrespective of which country has issued it. The denomination was introduced in 2002, when Austria retired the Austrian Schilling currency and introduced the Euro.

The coins have a common reverse designed by Luc Luycx in 1999 which showed a map of the European Union; it was changed in 2007 to reflect the enlargement of the Union, and later coins show all of western Europe. Each country has its own national obverse; the Austrian obverse was designed by Josef Kaiser.

Austrian Fifty Euro Cents feature the Secession Building Exhibition Hall in Vienna, symbolising the birth of Art Nouveau and a new age in the country. Austria is the only country which uses the Latin alphabet, and yet repeats the denomination on the national side of the coins - thus not adhering to a rule which only allows members of the Eurozone to show the denomination in their own language if it uses non-Latin script.

All Austrian coins are struck by the Austrian Mint in Vienna.

Obverse
Austria / Fifty Euro Cents, Austria - obverse photo

At centre, the obverse of the coin shows the Secession Building Exhibition Hall in Vienna. The motto of the Secessionist movement is written above the entrance of the pavilion: "Der Zeit ihre Kunst. Der Kunst ihre Freiheit" (To every age its art, to every art its freedom). It is spelled as DER ZEIT IHRE KVNST DER KVNST IHRE FREIHEIT in the original (old-style Latin V for U). Being too small for the size of the coin, the inscription is not readily readable on it.

In small letters below left, VER SACRUM. Meaning "Sacred Spring" in Latin, this was the title of the official magazine of the Vienna Secession art movement from 1898 to 1903.

Around above, the value and denomination: 50 EURO CENT. Around right, the date of issue: [year] and the flag of Austria with "heraldic hatching" (thin vertical lines) indicating its colours: red-white-red.

In the outer ring, the twelve stars of the European Union (representing the twelve original member states).

Reverse

The reverse of the coin shows on the left a representation of a map of the western part of Europe.

Behind the map and interrupted by it, six vertical lines connect the twelve stars of Europe - six around above left, and six around below left.

On the right, a large numeral value: 50, below which on two lines the denomination EURO CENT.

The designer's monogram LL (for Luc Luycx) is below right.
