Medals are a form of "exonumia" - objects related to coinage but not coins themselves. such are, for example, the medals included in many Royal Mint proof sets. They do not have any "face value" and are not tokens either, but can still be of interest to coin collectors.
Tokens were used in the past as a sort of privately issued money. This is no longer the case, but mints and other entities now strike medal-like objects they call "tokens".
This bimetallic (gold and silver) medallion was included with the 1992 "American Eagle" special edition set of the Australian Nugget gold series. The set was made for the American market, and the coins in it have an eagle privy mark, as a symbol of the United States. The medallion has the same device on one side, and the Perth Mint's logo on the other. |

At the centre of the obverse (which is made of gold), the logo of the Perth Mint as it was in 1992, depicting a black swan, with the inscription THE · PERTH · MINT around above, and EST. 1899 around below. The swan holds a banner with the inscription CYGNIS INSIGNIS, which means "distinguished for swans", being a Latin pun on the swan emblem (cygnis being Latin for "swan"). "Insignis" can also mean "remarkable", "outstanding" or "conspicuous" - all adjectives pointing to the long-standing association between Western Australia and the emblematic black swan.
The outer ring is made of silver, with a double toothed rim, inside which the inscription AUSTRALIA above and 1992 below. |
