The obverse of the coin shows the crowned bust of Queen Elizabeth II, facing right (her effigy known as the "Third Portrait"). The Queen is wearing the royal diadem which she used to wear on her way to and from the State Opening of Parliament, a pearl necklace and earrings.

Incuse in tiny letters on the neck truncation, the designer's initials RDM (for Raphael David Maklouf).

The reverse features a realistic representation of a Nailtailed Wallaby facing right, with a starburst background (stylised rays of sunlight not quite reaching the centre).

On the right, on two lines the inscription NAILTAILED WALLABY.

Around above, the name of the series and the precious metal content: THE AUSTRALIAN NUGGET 1/2 OZ. 9999 GOLD (one half of a troy ounce of 99.99% gold).
