The Republic of Cameroon uses the Central African CFA Franc as its currency; it is the common currency of six independent states in central Africa: Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. The CFA Franc has both common and national issues. All common circulating coins are issued under the authority of CEMAC ("Communauté Économique et Monétaire de l'Afrique Centrale" - Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa) and have no issuing country. Separately, each member country can strike coins bearing its national symbols; these coins are legal tender in the other members of the bloc too.

Cameroon has authorised some foreign mints to strike coins under its issuing authority for collector's purposes. These are usually dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to the country itself. Many of them are in internationally popular formats, but some are in non-standard sizes, such as this one.

This coloured silver coin is part of series commemorating the great Polish writer Stanisław Lem, and features his novel The Invincible.

The series has a characteristic "retro-futuristic" style, with illustrations based on the original book illustrations by Polish artist Daniel Mróz.

The Invincible (Polish: Niezwyciężony) is a hard science fiction novel serialised in Gazeta Bialostocka in 1963 and published as a book in 1964. It was one of the first novels to explore the ideas of micro robots, smart dust, artificial swarm intelligence, and "necroevolution" (a term suggested by Lem in the novel for the evolution of non-living matter. The story of a heavily armed spaceship landing on the planet Regis on a rescue mission transports us to a world where humans and technology coexist in a fascinating and often frightening manner.
