The Republic of Cameroon uses the Central African CFA Franc as its currency; it is the common currency of six independent states in central Africa: Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. The CFA Franc has both common and national issues. All common circulating coins are issued under the authority of CEMAC ("Communauté Économique et Monétaire de l'Afrique Centrale" - Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa) and have no issuing country. Separately, each member country can strike coins bearing its national symbols; these coins are legal tender in the other members of the bloc too.
Cameroon has authorised some foreign mints to strike coins under its issuing authority for investment or for collector's purposes. These are usually dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to the country itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes, such as the large two troy ounces (2oz) of silver format.
This coloured silver coin is part of series commemorating the great Polish writer Stanisław Lem, and features his work Tales of Pirx the Pilot.
The series has a characteristic "retro-futuristic" style, with illustrations based on the original book illustrations by Polish artist Daniel Mróz.
Tales of Pirx the Pilot (Polish: Opowieści o pilocie Pirxie) is a science fiction stories collection about a spaceship pilot named Pirx. Individual stories were published during 1959 - 1965 in various collections. The first collection of stories specifically about Pirx was published in 1965 in the Soviet Union in Russian under the title Охота на Сэтавра ("The Hunt for Setaur"). In Poland a collection (Opowieści o pilocie Pirxie) was published in 1968, and translated to English in two parts (Tales of Pirx the Pilot and More Tales of Pirx the Pilot) in 1979 and 1982. Pirx stories include both philosophical and comic elements. |
