The Cook Islands, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar circulates in parallel with the local Cook Islands Dollar; at the same time, the government also authorises many legal tender coins in the Cook Islands Dollar currency for collector's purposes. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes, including half of a troy ounce of silver - such as this coin.

This coin featuring the Erfoud Meteorite NWA 6827 is part of the Meteorite Impacts collection which is issued in a number of different countries; all coins in it have an embedded original piece of the specific meteorite.

Fourteen meteorite coins have been produced by CIT since 2004 making it perhaps the longest running meteorite coin series in the world. The latest addition to the extensive lineup is the Erfoud Meteorite NWA6827, which follows in the footsteps of the Chergach and Tamdakht coins featuring a spectacular breakthrough at the centre of the impact crater, adorned with a real meteorite fragment. The Erfoud Meteorite coin is copper plated to reflect the natural colour of the Moroccan desert. Partial colour applications highlight the crater relief. The original meteorite weighed 1,289 grams and was discovered in 2008. Shipped in a newly designed collector's box, the Erfoud Meteorite is sure to take centre stage in any collection.
