Coin | Silver Half Ounce 2019 Estacado Meteorite |

The Cook Islands, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar circulates in parallel with the local Cook Islands Dollar; at the same time, the government also authorises many legal tender coins in the Cook Islands Dollar currency for collector's purposes. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes, including half of a troy ounce of silver - such as this coin.
This coin featuring the Estacado Meteorite is part of the Meteorite Impacts collection which is issued in a number of different countries; all coins in it have an embedded original piece of the specific meteorite.
The Mint says about it: The 2019 edition of this series (already the 15th issue) is dedicated to Estacado, a 290 kg meteorite which was found in 1883 in Hale County, Texas. Have a look at the details of that special shaped coin. The break through and an original piece of this meteorite create an amazing dynamic visualisation. You can almost feel the power of the impact when Estacado hit the earth. For the first time ever, CIT has struck this amazing coin out of a special Titanium and Silver alloy which gives an out of this world look! It is also the largest of the series and measures an impressive 50 mm in diameter without increasing the weight of just ½ oz. The obverse shows a picture of the Big Bend National Park with the shiny Rio Grande river. The reverse features a star dust finish that represents space along with a colourised image of Earth. |

Obverse | |
The obverse of the coin shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.
In small letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).
Around the effigy is the monarch's legend, the date of issue and the value: ELIZABETH II 2 DOLLARS COOK ISLANDS 2019.
The surface of the coin is "broken", with a piece of the meteorite inserted into the intrusion.
The effigy of the Queen and the legend are in a small circle. The rest of the obverse displays a landscape from the Big Bend National Park in Texas, and the Rio Grande river.
Around above right, an inscription states the composition of the coin: 1/2 oz Titanium Silver .925 - one half of a troy ounce of 92.5% silver - known as "sterling silver" - alloyed with titanium and not with copper as is usually the case. |
