Silver Five Grams 2021 Year of the Ox, Coin from Mongolia
CoinSilver Five Grams 2021 Year of the Ox

The currency of Mongolia since 1925 has been the tögrög, which currently circulates mostly as banknotes due to the low value of earlier coins and the reluctance of the government to issue large denomination coins; however, the government has authorises many non-circulating legal tender (NCLT) coins to be issued for collector's purposes.

Collector coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes and are often not related to the country itself. Many of them are in sizes based on the troy ounce, but some are "metric", including the small five grams (5g) of silver format used for "coin notes" - a thin foil with a coloured design like that of a banknote.

This coin is part of CIT's Lunar Year Collection dedicated to the Chinese Zodiac, and was issued to mark the 2021 Year of the Ox.

The Mint says about it:
This special banknote shows wonderfully the contrast between the different silver finishes as well as the brilliant colour that has been expertly applied. This note carries a Legal Tender denomination of 100 Togrog and is limited to only 5,000 pieces.

Obverse

The obverse is styled as a banknote and depicts, slightly off centre, the logo of Mongolbank (the Bank of Mongolia), which is formed as a round coin on a lotus bouquet associated with purity, delicacy and stability. Three fire flames and a blooming flower are located inside the coin. The figure symbolises eternal development and youth and the three flames represent the main national treasures. At the nominal value location the Soyombo symbol is positioned, representative of the Mongol ethnicity. There is a variation from the official logo: the name of the Central Bank of Mongolia is written below the figure as MongolBank in Latin script, and not as МонголБанк in Cyrillic which is the official script of the Mongolian language and the way the name is normally written on the logo.

On the left, in large letters the name of the issuing authority: BANK OF MONGOLIA, below which the text It is hereby certified that these minted commemorative notes are legal tender of The Bank of Mongolia (The Central Bank).

In a thin strip below that, Ag .999 · 5 g · 5000 pcs · 150 × 70 mm · 2021: 5 grams of 99.9% silver, followed by the mintage, dimensions and date of issue.

Vertically in the background, two lines with the inscription Mongol Uls in the traditional Mongolian script. Below left, the value: 100.

In large letters on the right, on two lines the value and denomination 100 TOGROG.

The background is decorated with a "guiloche" - an intricate geometric pattern of thin coloured lines, intended to make copying banknotes difficult.
