Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - such as a quarter ounce of gold (abbreviated as 1/4 oz Au, where "Au" comes from the Latin word for gold, Aurum). Many of these feature famous movie characters.
This proof coin marks the 75th anniversary of Disney's cartoon character Scrooge McDuck.
Scrooge McDuck is known today in particular through the series "DuckTales" - but his role as Donald Duck's billionaire uncle began back in 1947, when he made his first appearance in the Disney comic strip "Christmas on Bear Mountain". Since then, it's hard to imagine Duckburg without the passionate businessman and founder of McDuck Enterprises, who likes to swim in his money bin. Although he can be quite grouchy, his character has changed so that he is now less similar to his namesake Ebenezer Scrooge than he was at the beginning of his career at Disney. Although Scrooge McDuck makes high demands on others and is characterised by his stingy behaviour, he is very loyal and benevolent towards his family. |
