One Dollar Silver 2020 Prague - National Theatre, Coin from Niue - detailed information

Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.

A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are made using "smartminting" techniques and have features not generally found in circulation coins - e.g. high relief, full colour printing and/or different forms, including fully three dimensional (3D).

Some coins are marketed in standard bullion sizes, like half ounce silver, one ounce silver etc, and some of those are also denominated as $1, for which see respective lists; this particular coin denominated as One Niue Dollar is not in a standard ounce-based size.

The Mint says about this coin:
The Nation to Itself (Národ sobě) - who would not know the motto that symbolises Czech patriotism and cultural heritage, which became the foundation stone of the National Theatre? The Theatre served the development of the Czech language, which was oppressed by German, and to support the production of domestic dramas and operas. The cooperation of all social classes enabled the establishment of the National Theatre and the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone, which took place in 1868, became a national political manifestation. However, the Czechs did not enjoy their own theatre for a long time because the neo-Renaissance building, which was the work of our greatest artists, was destroyed by fire in 1881. “It was Friday, the blackest Friday of our modern national life. We came to the countryside only on Saturday noon and I still see my crushed father sitting at the table, and my mother crying in the corner", wrote the poet Jaroslav Kvapil. At that time, however, real Czech coherence became apparent - children learned about money boxes in which our villages and towns collected money to rebuild the theatre.

The Czech National Revival culminated in the opening of the National Theatre, when visitors were welcomed by the tones of Smetana's Libuše in 1883.
