Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.

A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes based on the troy ounce, but some are in the metric system and go to the very large size of three kilograms (3 kg) of silver.

This premium bullion coin highlights Bohemian King Charles IV, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, in his role of husband and father.

The Mint says about it:
King Charles IV was married a total of four times. These were classic medieval dynastic marriages, and diplomacy always played a key role in the selection of the bride. The first wife of the Father of the Fatherland was named Blanche of Valois. The young man had a true romantic love for her and they had two daughters together. But when the Queen died, Charles was forced to marry a second time. Anne of Bavaria bore him a longed-for son, but the boy did not live to be two, and his mother died soon too. Less than four months after Anna's death, Charles married again. His bride, Anne of Swidnica, was only fourteen years old and had originally been promised to his deceased son. The third wife secured the Father of the Fatherland's influence over Silesia, gave birth to another daughter and finally to the male heir - the future King Wenceslas IV.

The birth of his son was a personal event, but the news of his birth was followed closely by the whole of Europe. The father's wish to christen the boy Wenceslas had its reasons - he himself had been christened with this name, he was a great admirer of the legacy of St. Wenceslas, and last but not least he wanted to emphasise that the Luxembourg family continued the Czech dynastic tradition.

After the death of Anna of Swidnica, Charles IV married again. He fathered with Elizabeth of Pomerania another son whose name has gone down in history - Sigismund of Luxembourg.

Obverse
Niue / Silver Three Kilos 2021 Charles IV - Husband and Father - obverse photo

The obverse of the coin shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.

In small letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).

Around the effigy is the monarch's legend, the date of issue and the value: ++ NIUE ISLAND + ELIZABETH II ++ 240 DOLLARS 2021.

The Queen's effigy is smaller than normal and is surrounded by six arches, in which there are six shields bearing insignia related to King Charles IV - including the double-tailed lion of Bohemia, the eagle of Moravia, the three fleurs-de-lis of France, and the double-headed eagle of the Holy Roman empire.

Above left, the mint mark of the Czech Mint - a crowned monogram of the letters ČM (Česká mincovna). Above right, 3000g (three thousand grams, or three kilograms). On two lines in the left field, Ag 999 (99.9% silver - Ag is abbreviated from Argentum, the Latin word for silver).

In the right field, the date of issue 2021. Below right, the monogram of the designer, HP (for Petr Horák).
