Coin | Gold Five Ounces 2022 Tiffany Art Metropolis - San Pietro |

The Republic of Palau is an island country in the western Pacific, in free association with the United States. In one way or another, the country has been under US administration since it was established, and has never had its own separate currency - it has always used the US Dollar. However, Palau allows some foreign mints to issue coins under its authority; these are denominated in US Dollars but are only legal tender in Palau, so can in a way be considered to be in "Palau Dollars", even though such a currency does not officially exist.
The coins are usually dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to the country itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes, including the very large five troy ounces (5oz) of gold format.
This coin is part of the Tiffany Art Metropolis series by CIT Coin Invest, and depicts San Pietro (Saint Peter's Cathedral) in Rome.
The mint says about it: The eternal city - a living monument to the incredible empire that was tirelessly built. Following our hymn of praise to the city itself, we turn our gaze to one of its most impressive monuments. The St. Peter’s Basilica - a cultural, historical and architectural landmark, which holds within itself treasures from millennia including paintings, sculptures, artefacts and more.
The imposing façade and the famous dome with its cross extending into the edge of the coin adorns the front. On the central balcony, we might spot the Pope himself, addressing his devoted audience. At the back, through the half-opened monumental Filarete portal, we catch a glimpse of the captivating interior of the basilica. Beneath the central dome and above the tomb of St Peter rises Bernini’s divine baldachin. The red luminous Tiffany glass draws attention by revealing the blueprint of the entire cathedral. |

Obverse | |
The obverse of the coin features the unofficial "Emblem of Palau" used on much of the country's coinage. It has an ornate shield at centre, on which is depicted the sea god Neptune, crowned and seated on a round stone and holding a trident in his left hand; on the right, a mermaid; on the left, a treasure chest. The ground is a beach, featuring waves and a starfish. Above Neptune, a star. Below the waves, the inscription RAINBOW'S END. Above the shield is a native rowing in a single-outrigger canoe.
Around above, the name of the country: REPUBLIC OF PALAU. Horizontally below, the face value 500 Dollars.
The emblem and inscription are small and are in the lower part of the obverse.
The rest of the design shows a close-up view of the interior of Saint Peter's cathedral in Rome, with a red glass insert below.
Below left, the name of the series Tiffany Art Metropolis, interrupted by the date 2022. |

Reverse | |
The reverse design shows a view of toward Saint Peter's cathedral in the Vatican (which is a micro state inside the city of Rome), with red glass inserts on two of the windows.
In the left field, the tiara and crossed keys symbol of the papacy. The crossed keys symbolise the keys of Simon Peter. The keys are gold and silver to represent the power of loosing and binding. The triple crown (the tiara) symbolises the triple power of the Pope as "father of kings", "governor of the world" and "Vicar of Christ".
On two lines above left, the inscription SAN PIETRO IN VATICANO. |
