CoinSilver Ten Ounces 2022 Britannia

Saint Helena is a small island in the South Atlantic Ocean which is part of the British overseas territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. The currency of the island is the Saint Helena pound, fixed at parity with the pound sterling. The island has authorised some private mints to issue coins under its jurisdiction, which come in a variety of sizes - including in the very large silver ten ounces (10 oz silver) format, usually denominated as £10.

This rectangular coin has the same form factor as a silver bar, but is legal tender bullion issued by The East India Company (modern), and features the standing figure of Britannia - the female personification of Britain, which has been displayed for centuries on the coinage of Great Britain and its dependencies - such as Saint Helena.

Saint Helena / Silver Ten Ounces 2022 Britannia - reverse photo

The reverse design features the standing figure of Britannia, depicted as a young female holding a trident in one hand and balancing a shield with the British Union Jack flag in the other, her cloak billowing in the wind behind. She wears a breastplate and a crested Corinthian helmet pushed back to reveal her face.

Above the figure, on two lines the inscription MAY GOD DIRECT MY STEPS; in its Latin form (DIRIGE DEUS GRESSUS MEOS) this was inscribed on the famous 1839 Una and the Lion five-pounds gold coin.

Below left, the heart-shaped EIC mint mark of the East India Company - the initials are in a saltire (diagonal cross) within a heart shape, crested with a 4.

The background has "rhumb lines" as on a nautical map; these radiate from a centre in the direction of wind or compass points and were used by pilots to lay courses from one harbour to another.
