The Royal Mint of the United Kingdom, which makes the country's circulating coinage, is also very active in the bullion coinage space and issues many bullion coins which are legal tender.
Additionally, it also makes bullion which is not legal tender and is targeted at investors and not at coin collectors - such as this one.
This bar is part of a series featuring Norse Gods, and is dedicated to Thor.
The Royal Mint says about it: "Thor is the mighty, red-bearded god within Norse mythology who is reputed throughout the nine realms as a powerful and courageous warrior. The defender of Asgard - the celestial home to the Aesir - and protector of humanity, Thor’s strength is often channeled towards fighting giants and trolls, as well as wrestling with the titanic Midgard serpent that encircles the earth.
The epic design for this bullion bar depicts Thor in a pose of divine power; he wields Mjollnir, his trusted hammer, above his head as he commands lightning from the sky above. Thor’s belt of strength, known as Megingjard, adorns his midriff, and he drives his chariot pulled by two male goats named Tanngniost (Teeth-grinder) and Tanngrisnir (Teeth-barer)."
The series was developed as a cooperation between the Royal Mint and Germania Mint. The bars were designed and struck by the Royal Mint, which also distributes them in the United Kingdom, while Germania Mint distributes them elsewhere. |
