The United States Five Cents coin (written as 5¢) is a unit of currency equalling one-twentieth of a United States dollar; the denomination is commonly known as a "nickel". The Jefferson Nickel has been the five-cent coin (abbreviated as 5¢) struck by the United States Mint since 1938, when it replaced the Buffalo Nickel. From 1938 until 2004, the copper-nickel coin's obverse featured a profile depiction of founding father and third U.S. President Thomas Jefferson. In 2006, a new forward-facing depiction was introduced which "is a fitting tribute to his vision". The reverse of the coin, initially designed by artist Felix Schlag in 1938 and featuring Jefferson's home Monticello, was newly sharpened by Mint engravers in 2006. The designer's initials were moved to the reverse since his original obverse, where they had been displayed after 1966, is no longer in use. 5¢ coins issued in 2008 have now been circulating for 17 years. | ||||||||||||
