Five Cents 2018 Jefferson Nickel, Coin from United States
CoinFive Cents 2018 Jefferson Nickel

The United States Five Cents coin (written as ) is a unit of currency equalling one-twentieth of a United States dollar; the denomination is commonly known as a "nickel".

The Jefferson Nickel has been the five-cent coin (abbreviated as ) struck by the United States Mint since 1938, when it replaced the Buffalo Nickel. From 1938 until 2004, the copper-nickel coin's obverse featured a profile depiction of founding father and third U.S. President Thomas Jefferson. In 2006, a new forward-facing depiction was introduced which "is a fitting tribute to his vision".

The reverse of the coin, initially designed by artist Felix Schlag in 1938 and featuring Jefferson's home Monticello, was newly sharpened by Mint engravers in 2006. The designer's initials were moved to the reverse since his original obverse, where they had been displayed after 1966, is no longer in use.

5¢ coins issued in 2018 have now been circulating for seven years.

Obverse

The obverse of the coin shows, within a plain border, the portrait of Thomas Jefferson (1743 - 1826) - the third President of the United States (1801 - 1809), facing the viewer.

The artists' initials are incuse in small letters - on the left side on his collar, JNF for designer Jamie N. Franki, and lower and to the right, DW for sculptor Donna Weaver.

Around above right, the motto IN GOD WE TRUST.

Horizontal, to the right of the portrait, the inscription Liberty in Thomas Jefferson's own handwriting (from the 2005 one-year obverse). The small letters were traced from his draft of the Declaration of Independence; as the word is never capitalised in that document, the capital L is borrowed from Jefferson's other writings.

Below, the date of issue: 2018.

The mint mark of the Denver Mint, the Philadelphia Mint or the San Francisco Mint is a small letter D, P or S respectively, located below the date.

Around below that, the value and denomination in words: FIVE CENTS.

Around above, the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM (from Latin: "Out of many, one").

Around below in larger letters, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

The designer's initials FS (for Felix Schlag), are to the right of the building.

This is probably better described as "inverse proof" - the fields are frosted while the design elements are mirror-like, which is the inverse of a regular proof.
