Tuvalu is a parliamentary democracy and Commonwealth realm. King Charles III became King of Tuvalu on his accession to the throne on 9 September 2022 upon the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. However, Tuvalu coinage continued carrying her effigy and legend into 2024, as no effigy of King Charles III was approved for use in the country until 2024.
Since the King resides in the United Kingdom, he is represented in Tuvalu by a Governor General, whom he appoints upon the advice of the Prime Minister of Tuvalu.
The coinage of the country is issued in the monarch's name and has his effigy and legend (in English) on the obverse. Quite often, non-circulating coins also have their face value, date of issue and precious metal content (if any) on the obverse, to free up the reverse for a commemorative or other design. |
