Shilling 1920, Coin from Australia - detailed information

Shilling 1920, Coin from Australia (withdrawn 1966)
CoinShilling 1920

The Australian Shilling is a silver coin which was used in the Commonwealth of Australia prior to decimalisation. It has the same dimensions and composition as the British pre-decimal shilling, from which it is derived (for a time, the coins circulated in parallel and were interchangeable in Australia - but not in the United Kingdom). A shilling is equal to 1/20th of a pound.

The reverse of this first type of Australian shilling coins features the 1908 Coat of Arms. In 1938, a new design superseded this one - featuring a merino ram's head; the old type of coins remained in circulation.

Coins issued in 1920 were withdrawn at decimalisation in 1966 after 46 years in circulation, but have never been formally demonetised and are still legal tender.

Notes

The Standard Australian Coin Catalogue 1973 lists mintage of 1,642,000.

Some experimental pieces were produced in 1920 as part of planned debasement of the silver alloy, which had a star above the date to indicate debased content; this is NOT a mint mark as in the 1921 shillings, where it denotes Sydney Mint. The debasement, in the end did not occur.

Renniks lists a Sydney Mint proof, not listed elsewhere.

Details

This is an experimental piece produced as part of planned debasement of the silver alloy. The debasement, in the end did not occur. The star indicates the debased alloy and is not (in this instance) a mint mark of the Sydney Mint.

This variety is listed in the "Australian Coins and Banknotes" catalogue by Greg McDonald but not in Krause.
