Ten Schilling 2001 (mint sets only), Coin from Austria - detailed information

Ten Schilling 2001 (mint sets only), Coin from Austria (demonetised 2002)
CoinTen Schilling 2001 (mint sets only)

The Ten Schilling coin was the largest denomination of the Austrian Schilling which circulated as a regular coin; it was introduced in 1957 to replace an earlier banknote.

The first type was in silver, which changed to copper-nickel plated nickel in 1974.

The reverse of the copper-nickel type was designed by Ferdinand Welz (it continued from the silver version), and there was a new obverse by Kurt Bodlak.

Austrian 10 Schilling coins issued in 2001 circulated for only one year until the denomination was demonetised, together with all the other Schilling coinage, in 2002 when the country changed to the Euro currency.

Obverse
Austria / Ten Schilling 2001 (mint sets only) - obverse photo

Within a plain border, the obverse of the coin features the Coat of Arms of the Republic of Austria, which is an eagle with open wings, crowned with a mural crown (representing a state, and not a monarch), holding a hammer in its left foot (right from the point of view of the viewer) and a sickle in its right foot. Its feet are in shackles, but the chain between them is broken, symbolising a liberated Austria.

On the eagle's breast, the shield of Austria divided into three horizontal stripes representing the national flag, with "heraldic hatching" (thin lines) indicating the colours: red-white-red.

Around the rim, the legend REPUBLIK · ÖSTERREICH · (Republic of Austria).

Obverse Inscription REPUBLIK · ÖSTERREICH ·
Reverse

Within a plain border, the reverse design shows the portrait of a woman, facing left. She wears a traditional headdress from the region of Wachau in Lower Austria.

Below right, a large numeral 10 for the value. Around left, the denomination SCHILLING. The date of issue, 2001, is around right.

Below the value near the rim, in small letters the surname of the designer: WELZ (for Ferdinand Welz).
