The currency of Mongolia since 1925 has been the tögrög, which currently circulates mostly as banknotes due to the low value of earlier coins and the reluctance of the government to issue large denomination coins; however, the government has authorises many non-circulating legal tender (NCLT) coins to be issued for collector's purposes.
Collector coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes and are often not related to the country itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes, including the internationally popular one ounce of silver format.
This coin is part of the Woodland Spirits series which features animals in colour and high relief.
The mint says about it: With the 7th edition of the "Woodland Spirits" series, we embark on an exciting journey exploring the world of bears. These impressive animals make their home in dense forests, mountain regions, coastal areas and in Mongolia even in the Gobi Desert.
Since the Mongolians regard their bear, known as the Gobi bear or Mazalaai, as a national treasure, even the Mongolian government supports the protection of this subspecies of brown bear. Enjoy the stunning sight of this remarkable icon of the animal kingdom amidst representatives of the winter flora. |
