Coin | Fifty Cents 2018 Armistice |
---|
|
On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the guns fell silent along the Western Front. The First World War had effectively ended. To commemorate this important centenary and honour those who served, a series of official stamps and legal tender commemorative coins have been issued.
The Armistice 50 Cents coloured coin is the second circulating coloured commemorative 50 cents coin, after the 2015 ANZAC 50 Cents.
The coin features the red poppy of the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services’ Association (RNZRSA) at its centre. The three silver ferns on the wreath surrounding the poppy represent the three services (Navy, Air Force and Army) within the New Zealand Defence Force. They also symbolise past, present and future. The unfolding koru pattern evokes new beginnings. |

The obverse shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.
In small letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).
Around the effigy is the monarch's legend and the date: NEW ZEALAND ELIZABETH II 2018.

Around it is a "Remembrance wreath" of green leaves and three silver ferns representing the three services (Navy, Air Force and Army) within the New Zealand Defence Force. The central circle is enclosed within another circle which features two larger ferns on an unfolding koru pattern (decorative spiral shape typical of Māori art). The ribbon below has the dates 1918 - 2018.
In the external circle around that, the inscription · ELEVENTH HOUR OF THE ELEVENTH DAY OF THE ELEVENTH MONTH · around above, and the value and denomination 50 CENTS around below. |
