Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - such as one ounce of gold (abbreviated as 1 oz Au, where "Au" comes from the Latin word for gold, Aurum).
This coin was issued to mark the 40th anniversary of the video game Ms. Pac-Man.
Ms.PAC-MAN is an arcade video game originally presented to the public in 1981 by Midway, the American distributor of PAC-MAN, as a sequel to that series. Ms.PAC-MAN was then released on January 13th, 1982 to critical acclaim. The game system is the same as PAC-MAN, but comes with additional features, such as an alternating maze designs which includes two warp tunnels instead of one. The classic arcade game went on to sell 125,000 cabinets by 1988. It was also ported to several home video game consoles and won multiple awards. |
