Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.

A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes based on the troy ounce, but some are in the metric system and go to the extremely large size of five kilograms (5 kg) of silver.

The coins are "Non-Circulating Legal Tender" (NCLT) and not bullion because they are issued at prices much higher than their bullion value and are targeted at collectors who appreciate them for their artistic or sentimental value, and not at bullion investors.

This coin is part of the Slovakia Eagle ("Orol") range of premium bullion coins issued by the Czech Mint.

The mint says about it:
World bullion coins tend to be dedicated to strong national symbols and the Eagle (Orol in Slovak), the first coin of its kind to be minted for the Slovak market, is no exception. The Slovaks have waited long and patiently for the opportunity for self-determination - like a bird of prey circling in the sky above the majestic Tatra Mountains looking for its prey. It is no wonder that Slovak poets and revivalists of the 19th century regarded the eagle as a kindred spirit and that Ľudovít Štúr himself named the cultural supplement of the Slovak National Newspaper "The Tatra Eagle" ("Orol tatránski" in Slovak). Despite the efforts of their foreign rulers, the Slovaks preserved their culture, language and character until they finally succeeded in winning their independence. The symbol of all they achieved was once again the eagle, which has always represented strength, victory, freedom and nobility, but also resurrection and new life.

The bird of prey, which represents the Christian kingdom of heaven, also refers to Slovak religious tradition.

In 2023, the reverse side is dominated by the flying golden eagle, which is the lord of the Tatras, and the magnificent mountain peak Kriváň rises below it

Obverse

The obverse of the coin features the official Public Seal of Niue.

It has an inner circle of hiapo designs, representing the fonua (land), within which are stylised designs of a tree, representing life and tagata Niue (the people of Niue), surrounded by an outer circle in the form of a traditional Niuean garland of 14 seashells (representing the 14 villages of Niue), and crowned with St Edward's Crown (of the United Kingdom), representing the sovereign as head of state.

Around above between the two circles, the inscription PUBLIC SEAL OF NIUE. Below, a ribbon carries the motto ATUA NIUE TUKULAGI on two lines (meaning "God, Niue Eternally"), below which two crossed katoua (Niue fighting clubs).

The seal is smaller than normal and is enclosed within an oval above left. Between that and the outer rim with the inscriptions, the background is covered with ornaments of the Čičmany pattern, which is unique to Slovak folk architecture.

Near the rim around below, the face value 240 DOLLARS; around above right, the date of issue 2023.

Around left and around right, the inscription 5000 g Ag 999 (five kilograms of 99.9% silver - Ag is abbreviated from Argentum, the Latin word for silver), interrupted by SLOVAKIA above.

In the right field, above the eagle's tail, the mint mark of the Czech Mint - a crowned monogram of the letters ČM (Česká mincovna). In the left field, above the edge of the mountain, the monogram of the designer, MD (for Martin Dašek).
