Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes, based on the troy ounce - such as the half ounce of silver format (abbreviated as 1/2 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum).
This coin was issued as part of a set of four silver coins featuring Winners of the Summer Olympic Games 2012 from the Czech Republic.
The Mint says about it:
All four silver coins feature Czech athletes who won a gold medal on the XXXth Summer Olympics and the XIVth Summer Paralympics in London, and have the same obverse side featuring one of the dominant sights of London - the Tower Bridge, as well as the obligatory features of the coin: effigy of Queen Elizabeth, denomination, and the year of issue.

In a small circle above, the obverse of the coin shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits. There are no designer's initials below the effigy. Around right, ELIZABETH II.
In the centre of the obverse, the Tower Bridge - one of the famous sites of London, host city of the 2012 Olympic Games. Above and to the right of it, the mint mark of the Czech Mint - a crowned monogram of the letters ČM (Česká mincovna).
Below the bridge, a dragon supports a shield representing England.
Around left, the face value 1 DOLLAR, bellow which NIUE ISLAND, and below that the date of issue 2013. |

The reverse of the coin features Jiří Ježek - road and track racing cyclist and Paralympian who has won medals at three Paralympic Games, including those at London in 2012. He is show non his bike during the competition.
