Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes, based on the troy ounce - such as the half ounce of silver format (abbreviated as 1/2 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum).
This coin is part of the four coin Lords of Žerotín noble family set by the Czech Mint and is dedicated to Charles the Elder of Žerotín.
The Mint says about it: This set of four silver coins is about to the Lords of Žerotín, an ancient family who lived in Moravia and whose members are noted for their level of education, intellect and power.
Charles the Elder of Žerotín (1564-1636), a politician, soldier, writer and cultured nobleman, was a great and also tragic figure of the Protestant states of the Czech kingdom. He recognised the risks of the Bohemian Estates Uprising, but in an attempt to compromise the neutrality and political confrontation with the Habsburgs, he failed. He voluntarily chose to emigrate, but eventually died in his Moravia in the middle of the Thirty Years War. On the reverse of the coin he is depicted at an older age with a respectable beard. |
