Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - typically, one ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum).
This coin is the first release in the Solar System series of coloured proofs and features our planet, the Earth.
The Mint says about it: Earth is the home of mankind and the only planet with a life. Its existence is ensured by a sufficient mass of the planet that maintains a high atmosphere and by a temperature range that allows the existence of water in a liquid state. Water covers more than two-thirds of the surface of the "blue planet". Earth has the highest density of all the solar system planets. It also has a strong magnetic field to protect it from devastating solar winds, and the largest satellite in comparison to its own size.
On the reverse side of the coin, which was designed by the author duo Asamat Baltaev, DiS., and Jiří Hanuš, DiS., you will find a coloured depiction of the Earth. The obverse side of the coin (designed by Asamat Baltaev) depicts the entire solar system and presents the astronomical symbols of each planet.
Photographs or computer graphics were not used for colouring - the authors created original watercolour paintings. The surface is characterised by a special treatment - a combination of proofing, sandblasting and using lasers resulted in a new effect that was entitled the “moon dust”. |
