Saint Helena is a small island in the South Atlantic Ocean which is part of the British overseas territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. The currency of the island is the Saint Helena pound, fixed at parity with the pound sterling. The island has authorised some private mints to issue coins under its jurisdiction, which come in a variety of sizes - including in the popular gold ounce (1 oz gold) format, denominated as £5.
The 2023 1 oz St Helena Modern United States Trade Dollar Gold Proof Coin is part of a range dedicated to "trade dollars" and is an artist's impression of what a modern US trade dollar would look like.
During the 1860’s an increase in trade between China and the United States paved the way for a "commercial" US Trade Dollar that could compete with the silver trade coins used by other countries in the Orient. The new American Trade Dollars with a fineness of 90 percent silver and weighing 27.2 grams were minted for export from 1873. Minted until 1878, they were to become one of the shortest lived of all United States numismatic series. |
