|Coin||Gold Tenth-Ounce 2021 Vivat Humanitas|
Tokelau, known previously as the Tokelau Islands, is a dependent territory of New Zealand in the southern Pacific Ocean. It uses the New Zealand Dollar as circulation currency, but has been issuing a variety of non-circulating coins since 1978, and has also authorised some foreign mints to issue bullion coins under its jurisdiction - such as this one.
This is the third design in the Vivat Humanitas (long live humanity) series issued by the Pressburg Mint based in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. It is also the first time the series was issued in gold.
The Mint says about it:
“Where words fail, music speaks.”
- Hans Christian Andersen
The design in the Vivat Humanitas series point out the idea of humanity that keeps on advancing and delivers impressive achievements despite all conflicts and differences. In this issue we are celebrating music as the universal and unique language of mankind.
The obverse design of the coin features the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits. In tiny letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).
The portrait is smaller than usual and is located to the right of the centre; it is surrounded by a stylised piano keyboard.
The rest of the surface features music-related symbols, including symbols of notes, the representation of an audio wave above left, and music lines on which is written 1/10 oz (one tenth of a troy ounce) and Au 9999 (99.99% gold) below.
Below left, the legend of the monarch on two lines: ELIZABETH II TOKELAU.
At the centre of the reverse, in a eight-pointed figure consisting of two squares, a stylised human eye and a clef symbol in the middle of a musical score; in the right part of that, the face value $10 (ten dollars). In four of the corners, more musical symbols: eighth note, common time, chord, coda.
The background of the centre imitates vinyl record grooves.
Around above, the inscription VIVAT HUMANITAS (translated from Latin: "Long live humanity”), Around below, the date of issue 2021.
