Tokelau, known previously as the Tokelau Islands, is a dependent territory of New Zealand in the southern Pacific Ocean. It uses the New Zealand Dollar as circulation currency, but has been issuing a variety of non-circulating coins since 1978. These are denominated in dollars or "Tala" (the local word for dollar) and cents.

The country has also authorised some foreign mints to issue non circulating coins under its jurisdiction. Some of them are in the very large five ounces of silver format, such as this coin.

This silver coin commemorates the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation.

Elizabeth II was born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary of the House of Windsor in London on April 21, 1926. On February 6, 1952, she ascended the throne at the age of 25 and was crowned queen on June 2, 1953, at Westminster Abbey. She was constitutional monarch of 16 sovereign states known as "Commonwealth Realms", including their territories and dependent territories, head of the 53-state Commonwealth of Nations, and secular head of the Anglican Church of England.

Queen Elizabeth II was the longest reigning monarch to date and the first ever to celebrate a platinum jubilee. She died at the age of 96 surrounded by her closest family members at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

Obverse

The obverse of the coin shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.

In small letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).

Around the effigy is the monarch's legend, the date of issue and the value: ELIZABETH II TOKELAU 2023 TEN DOLLARS 5oz 999 SILVER.

The inscription around the rim also incorporates the precious metal content - five troy ounces of 99.9% silver.

The effigy of the Queen is smaller than normal; the background is decorated with a geometric motif from a stained glass window from the Westminster Abbey.

In the lower part of the rim, there is a representation of the national flag of Tokelau.
