The Tuvaluan Dollar is the currency of Tuvalu - a small nation in the Pacific Ocean. Tuvalu has never had banknotes of its own, and has been issuing coins since 1976; these circulate together with coins of the Australian Dollar, which is also legal tender in the country, and to which the Tuvaluan Dollar is pegged.
The Australian Perth Mint issues a large variety of non-circulating legal tender coins under the authority of Tuvalu. Some of these are in the silver ounce format (abbreviated as 1 oz). Strictly speaking, they are not bullion as they are priced at a premium and are targeted at collectors who appreciate them for their artistic merit and collectable value and not just for their precious metal content.
This coin is part of a Perth Mint series of coloured one-ounce silver coins depicting Star Trek characters, and features the U.S.S. Enterprise NX-01 from Star Trek: Enterprise.
Gene Roddenberrys Star Trek franchise started in 1966 with the appearance of the original series on American television. Over the course of 50 years, the franchise grew to include four spin-off television series, each of which was intertwined with the timelines of the Star Trek franchise, an animated series, and 13 feature films.
Star Trek: Enterprise launched in September 2001 and was considered a prequel. Throughout the shows run on TV, the story line sought to try and tie up loose ends that existed throughout the franchise, connecting the dots that were left unclear in previous series. Actor Scott Bakula starred as Captain Jonathan Archer in the series, commanding the USS Enterprise NX-01. |
