Coin | Silver Two Ounces 2023 British Monarchs - King Charles II |

|
Like many other mints, the Royal Mint issues bullion coins in precious metals, having much higher intrinsic value than their face value. The two ounce (2 oz) silver coins are denominated as Five Pounds (£5).
The coins are legal tender but are not intended for circulation. They are targeted at bullion investors or collectors who appreciate the special editions as pieces of art. The coins are typically "one-year" types usually issued in parallel with smaller denominations with the same reverse designs.
This design is the seventh release in a Royal Mint series dedicated to the history of British monarchy and the monarchs of England, Great Britain and the United Kingdom, and features King Charles II (1660 - 1685).
The Royal Mint says about it: The latest monarch commemorated as part of our British Monarchs Collection is Charles II. Charles II’s restoration to the throne took place in 1660, more than 11 years after the execution of his father Charles I. Nicknamed the Merry Monarch, Charles II was one of the most popular British monarchs to grace the throne. The seventh coin in our British Monarchs Collection features a beautifully remastered portrait of Charles II. John Roettiers, originally from Flanders, designed the original portrait chosen to feature as part of the collection. |

Obverse | |
The obverse of the coin displays the first definitive portrait of King Charles III, which shows his bare (uncrowned) head facing left.
Below the neck truncation in tiny letters, the artist's initials MJ (for Martin Jennings).
Around, the monarch's legend followed by the face value and date of issue: CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 5 POUNDS · 2023 ·. Translated from Latin, the legend means: Charles the Third, by the Grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith.

Reverse | |
Within a toothed border, the reverse of the coin depicts the laureate effigy of King Charles II, facing right.
Around the rim, part of the monarch's legend CAROLVS · II · DEI · GRATIA, which in Latin means "Charles the Second, by the Grace of God". On his original coinage, the rest of the legend would have been on the other side of the coin (the reverse, because his portrait would have been on the obverse). |
