Sir Winston Churchill (2024) Medal, Coin from United Kingdom - detailed information

Medals are a form of "exonumia" - objects related to coinage but not coins themselves. Such are, for example, the medals included in many Royal Mint proof sets. They do not have any "face value" and are not tokens either, but can still be of interest to coin collectors.

This medal was issued as part of coin sets paying homage to the life of Sir Winston Churchill, marking the 150th anniversary from his birth.

Recognised as one of Britain’s most memorable leaders during the Second World War, Sir Winston Churchill was influenced by his early experiences in the Queen’s 4th Hussars and his work as a war correspondent. Churchill received a Nobel Prize in Literature for his extensive written work and was the first person outside of the Royal Family to receive a state funeral.

The reverse of the medal repeats the design of the 1965 Churchill commemorative crown.

The designer of the 1965 Winston Churchill Memorial Crown, Oscar Neman, was born in Croatia and moved to London in 1938. He worked from a studio outside Oxford, and sculpted many recognised figures including Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. His statue of Sir Winston Churchill stands in the Members Lobby of the House of Commons, its foot now burnished bright by many years of being touched "for luck".
