Five Cents 1942 Jefferson Nickel, Coin from United States - detailed information

Five Cents 1942 Jefferson Nickel, Coin from United States
CoinFive Cents 1942 Jefferson Nickel

The United States Five Cents coin (written as ) is a unit of currency equalling one-twentieth of a United States dollar; the denomination is commonly known as a "nickel".

The Jefferson Nickel has been the five-cent coin (abbreviated as ) struck by the United States Mint since 1938, when it replaced the Buffalo Nickel. From 1938 until 2004, the copper-nickel coin's obverse featured a profile depiction of founding father and third U.S. President Thomas Jefferson by artist Felix Schlag; the obverse design used in 2005 was also in profile, though by Joe Fitzgerald. Since 2006 Jefferson's portrayal, newly designed by Jamie Franki, faces forward. The coin's reverse is still the Schlag original, although in 2004 and 2005 the piece bore commemorative designs.

5¢ coins issued in 1942 have now been circulating for 82 years.

Due to World War II, a "wartime composition" for the five-cent piece was introduced, to eliminate nickel from the alloy as it was needed for the war effort. Starting on 8th October 1942, the composition of the coin changed to 56% copper, 35% silver and 9% manganese. The Philadelphia Mint issued both types in 1942, Denver only the old type (called Type 1 in numismatic literature) and San Francisco only the new (Type 2).

The obverse of the coin shows, within a plain border, the portrait of Thomas Jefferson (1743 - 1826) - the third President of the United States (1801 - 1809), facing left, his hair long and tied with a ribbon.

Around left, the motto IN GOD WE TRUST.

Around right, the inscription LIBERTY is separated by a five-pointed star from the date of issue: 1942.

Surrounded by a plain rim, the reverse of the coin shows at its centre the main building of Monticello - the main residence of Thomas Jefferson which he designed himself. Below that, its name: MONTICELLO.

Around below that, the value and denomination in words: FIVE CENTS.

Around above, the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM (from Latin: "Out of many, one").

Around below in larger letters, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

Copper-nickel coins struck by the Philadelphia Mint have no mint mark. Coins struck by the Denver Mint or the San Francisco Mint have a small letter D or S respectively, located to the right of the building - above the A of AMERICA.

Silver coins struck by the Philadelphia Mint have a large letter P as mint mark above the dome of Monticello.

Notes

In 1942, the Philadelphia Mint issued 49,789,000 circulation coins and 29,600 proofs in copper-nickel and 57,873,000 circulation coins and 27,600 proofs in silver. The silver coins have a large P mint mark above the dome of Monticello. This is the first time the Philadelphia Mint used a mint mark. Its intention was to indicate the change in alloy.

The Denver Mint and the San Francisco Mint only struck circulation coins - Denver only copper-nickel, and San Francisco only silver.
